Youth Poetry Workshop with Rose & the Nightingale June 9, 2012

If you love poetry and nature, here’s a unique opportunity to work with professional poets and musicians in the lush galleries of the Conservatory of Flowers to create poems in haiku form that will be shared in an evening concert by New York City-based quartet, Rose & the Nightingale, and you can be part of the show too!

Working with San Francisco poets Evan Karp and Silvi Alcivar, as well as the virtuoso members of Rose & the Nightingale, youth will draw inspiration from the different galleries of the Conservatory, learning to craft haiku in response to the natural environment. Then, listen as your words are transformed into song. Using their voices and instruments, band members will spontaneously create new melodies on the spot (bring a recording device so you can capture the moment!). Highlights from the day’s workshop will be showcased at an evening concert that same day with an invitation to workshop participants to join in the show!

Rose & the Nightingale is a quartet of world-class improvising vocalists and instrumentalists, who create unique genre-defying music that blurs the boundaries of world music, folk, and jazz improvisation. This summer, the group celebrates the sublimity of gardens through poetry and song in a special concert tour entitled “The Spirit of the Garden” that receives its West Coast debut at the Conservatory of Flowers that same evening.

Rose & the Nightingale’s live performances are noted for their fiery rhythmic energy, sublime harmonies, and lyrical beauty. Members of Rose & the Nightingale have performed internationally at venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Radio City Music Hall, the Barbican in London, Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco, Chicago Symphony Hall, and at the world's most prestigious jazz festivals including the North Sea, Montreal, Montreux, Newport, San Francisco, and CapeTown South Africa Jazz Festivals, and Tokyo’s Blue Note.
