At first the Sycamores seem mad, but if they are mad, then the rest of the world is even madder. Alice the only relatively normal member of the eccentric Sycamore family, falls in love with Tony Kirby. His wealthy banker father, Anthony P. Kirby and his snobbish mother strongly disapprove of the match. When the Kirby’s are invited to dinner to become better acquainted with their future in-laws, things do not turn out the way Alice had hoped. Between the printing press in the parlor, the fireworks in the basement, the ballet in the living room, and the snake in the dining room, the Sycamore family may seem just a little crazy.
The cast, under the direction of Bernie Cardell, includes Andy Anderson as Paul Sycamore, Don DeVeux as Mr. Kirby, Nita Froelich as the Grand Duchess Olga Katrina, Bonnie Greene as Rheba, Jeff Jesmer as Tony Kirby, Cindy Laudadio-Hill as Mrs. Kirby, Bob Leggett as Mr. DePinna, Katie Mangett as Penny Sycamore, Michelle Merz-Hutchinson as Alice Sycamore, Peggy Miller as Gay Wellington, Missy Moore as Essie Carmichael, Steve Paulding as G-Man, Pat Payne as Henderson, Jesse Pearlman as Mr. Kolenkhov, Ken Street as Grandpa Vanderhoff, Luke Terry as Ed Carmichael and Dixon White as Donald.
George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart are remembered as masters of comedic playwriting. Each made important contributions to the American theater on his own, but they are best known for the successful and influential comedies they wrote together in the 1930s. For ten years Kaufman and Hart would collaborate on seven plays. Their third effort, "You Can't Take It With You," was their most successful work being awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1937. Kaufman and Hart sold the film rights to Columbia Pictures for a record-setting amount, and the 1938 film won an Academy Award for best picture. Successful Broadway revivals in 1965 and 1983 also attest to the play's timeless appeal.
