performed by Parvatha Chidambaram. A native of southern India, Parvatha introduces several Carnatic vocal pieces accompanied by mridamgum, a native percussion instrument of southern Asia. She is director of the dance and music school Barata, and has performed extensively throughout India and the United States.

performed by Nurmira Salimbaeva. A native of Kyrgyzstan, Nurmira graces the stage playing classical cello accompanied by piano. She also performs a Kyrgyz song with komuz, a native instrument. A graduate of Bishkeks prestigious Abdraev Music School, she continues her studies at the Eastman School of Music.

performed by the Ying Quartet. Now in its second decade, the Ying Quartet has developed an international reputation for its commitment to making artistic and creative expression an essential part of life. Initiatives in this direction include a visiting residency at Symphony Space in New York City linking music with other art forms (including poetry, dance, and film), collaborations with the Turtle Island String Quartet which explore jazz, improvisation, and the classical string quartet tradition, and a project with Hyperscore, a computer program that enables non-musicians to compose music for the Quartet to perform. The Yings ongoing commissioning project, LifeMusic, designed to produce a distinctively American string quartet repertoire, thus far includes ten new works, and this season adds quartets by Pierre Jalbert and John Duffy. Current recording projects include LifeMusic on the Quartz Label, Tchaikovsky for Arabesque, and a Telarc recording with the Turtle Island String Quartet. The EMI Classics recording of works by Osvaldo Golijov on which the Ying Quartet appears with the St. Lawrence Quartet was nominated for a 2003 Grammy Award. The Quartet is in residence at the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester, and since 2001 its members have been the Blodgett Artists in Residence at Harvard University.

With Musical Dim Sum, the Yings continue to extend their repertoire of innovative programming concepts while celebrating their own cultural heritage. On these programs, the Quartet includes a selection of short works by Chinese American composers in the framework of a traditional concert, giving audiences the treat of a diverse sampling of this music. The Quartet plans to commission new works by composers of Chinese background living around the globe to join existing pieces by Chou Wen-Chung, Zhou Long, Tan Dun, Bright Sheng, and Chen Yi.
