Born in Havana, Cuba, Xiomara Alfaro's early performing background was in musical theater, cabaret, radio and television. She eventually began touring internationally, leaving Cuba for the United States and widening her repertoire to include anything remotely Latin. Beginning with her stint as a singer and dancer with Katherine Dunham’s touring troupe, Alfaro has made a name for herself as a consummate musician in the '50s, '60s and '70s. She sang in the chorus that backed Celia Cruz and Olga Guillot at the Flamingo in Las Vegas and also appeared in films – most notably Mambo, with Italian actress Sylvana Mangano. She has recorded more than 28 records and has toured 32 countries.
