Writing War is planned as two reading and creative writing workshops, held between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturdays, the 18th and 25th of June 2011, for current and former servicemen and women who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is organised by two researchers from University College London (UCL), who work on articulations of war experiences, and Sarah May, the author of seven published books.
The aim of the workshops is to discuss how wartime experiences can be communicated to the broader public through writing. Using existing published soldiers' memoirs, they will teach soldiers different writing techniques, provide comments and advice on existing writing (where available) and explore the ways in which war stories are told. The workshops are free and no previous writing experience is required.
