Friends of the San Francisco Public Library and the San Francisco Public Library present the sixth annual Writers Remembered 2008: A celebration of the authors, poets and journalists who died in 2007. Friends, colleagues and admirers gather together in the Koret auditorium of the Main Library to honor and celebrate the creative minds that left us in the previous year.
This unique event will take place on Sunday, January 27th from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. A free event that is open to the public, Writers Remembered is a remarkable and memorable celebration of the literary spirit.
Among those to be remembered will be Phil Frank, San Francisco Chronicle cartoonist and Farley creator; David Halberstam, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author known for his early work on the Vietnam War; Molly Ivins, newspaper columnist, political commentator and best-selling author whose writing and reporting won her numerous awards; Norman Mailer, novelist, journalist, film director and two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize who co-founded of the Village Voice; Tillie Olsen, early feminist author who extensively researched her second non-fiction book in the SF Public Library; Grace Paley, American poet, short story writer and long time political activist; and Kurt Vonnegut, the prolific American novelist whose mix of satire and science fiction anchored him as a classic of the counterculture. Art Buchwald, Sharon Tyler Herbst and many others will also be honored.
Those who honor the writers will reminisce, revel or read from the works of those that have left us. Hosted by writer Gerry Nicosia participants this year include: Robert Mailer Anderson (Norman Mailer), Richard Boyle (David Halberstam), Sharon Doubiago (Grace Paley), Adam Hochschild (Allen Wheelis) and Karla Lutz (Tillie Olsen’s daughter).
