BRIDGE YOUR SOULFUL JOURNEY (BYSJ), a non-profit corporation chartered by the State of Tennessee, and the Bordeaux Branch of The Nashville Public Library will celebrate the TENTH ANNUAL POETRY AWARDS PRESENTATION in honor of National Poetry Month.
Writers of the Journey: Words Are Power 10 will be held on Saturday, April 17, 2010, 2:00 P.M. to 4:30 P.M. at the Bordeaux Library, located at 4000 Clarksville Pike Nashville, Tennessee 37218.
Two worthy poets in the Nashville community and surrounding areas receive awards each year in honor of Dr. Harriette Bias-Insignares, Official State Poet For Tennessee, and Ambassador of Letters, and Margaret Smith-Beach, Poet Laureate for the Metropolitan Nashville Retired Teacher's Association, who meet the criteria.
The Harriettte Bias-Insignares Award For Achievement in Poetry is given to a person who has demonstrated qualities and acts of mentoring other poets, publications in poetic and literary means of distribution, and readings and public performances over the span of the individual's professional artistic career.
The Margaret Smith-Beach Award For Dedication To Poetry honors an individual who has demonstrated qualities and acts of inspiration; has reached out to ordinary, everyday people; speaks for writers and poets who do not have a voice in their community; and generally acts as a springboard for emerging poets in their endeavors.
This year of 2010, marks the first time BYSJ has presented the Lifetime Achievement Award. This year’s recipient is Burnece Brunson, known to the community as Mother Brunson. .
Open-mic poetry/spoken word is included in the program.
Since 2001, 229 poets have received certificates, and 16 plaques since 2002, Our recipients include YouthSpeaks Nashville, the Summer Institute Girls/Music City Links, Creative Artists of Tennessee‘s .Dare To Dream, Relative Workshop youth participants, St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, the offices of the Governor, Mayor, State Senator Thelma Harper and former State Representative Edith Taylor Langster. .
BRIDGE YOUR SOULFUL JOURNEY recognizes poets in the community with plaques and Peoples Choice certificates.
