"Wreaths Across America" To Make Old Saybrook, CT a
major stop on the East Coast Tour Dec 12, 2007
November 27, 2007 Local veterans, townspeople and students will gather Wednesday morning, Dec. 12, for an emotionally charged town-led reception honoring the "Wreaths Across America" (www.wreathsacrossamerica.com) traveling caravan. Old Saybrook is slated to be the major official stop in Connecticut on WAAs journey to Arlington National Cemetery, where they will place wreaths on the graves of thousands of our fallen Soldiers, Airman, Sailors, Coast Guardsman and Marines
The special ceremonies will be held at the Old Saybrook High School at 1111 Boston Post Road in Old Saybrook on Tuesday Evening, December 11th and Wednesday, December 12th, at 8:15 AM EST.
As part of the town's special tribute, The Honorable Governor M. Jodi Rell and LT. Governor Michael Fedele have been invited to meet the "Wreaths Across America" team before they continue their holiday journey toward Arlington, Va.- Morrill Worcester, owner of Worcester Wreaths in Maine, began this generous initiative in 1992 with a trailer full of New England-grown wreaths decorated by volunteers, which he laid at the graves of fallen soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. Over the years, the "Wreaths" mission has grown to encompass its current theme of "Remember, Honor, and Teach" the value of freedom in today's world.
Welcoming Wreaths Across America will be a town-wide effort in Old Saybrook, says Don Lucas, one of the event coordinators and a member of the Old Saybrook Fire Department. "Last year, we hosted them in town and they were all touched by the generosity and genuine goodwill that this town showed them. So they wanted to stop here again and everyone in town has pulled together to make Dec. 11 and Dec. 12 a very special time -- for Morrill Worcester and the "Wreaths Across America" folks and for those of us in Old Saybrook. This year's special tribute will include all our citizen volunteers, as well as the volunteer fire department, high school, our local Boy Scouts, the Old Saybrook Police Department and the CT State Police.
