James Levine interprets Berg's masterpiece, which stars two great singing actors: Matthias Goerne and Waltraud Meier. It was shortly before the First World War that Alban Berg decided to make an operatic version of Buchner's play about a soldier who subjects himself to medical experiments to augment his pay. For various reasons the premiere was not until 1925, and the opera received just a few productions until after the Second World War. It was only then that audiences started fully to appreciate Berg's musical style and the taut psychological drama of the people who cause Wozzeck to commit suicide.
