Thierry Escaich, Professor of Music at the Conservatoire de Paris and organist at Saint Etienne-du-Mont in Paris, will perform in the “Great Organ: Great Artists” concert series at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, on Tuesday, April 20, at 7:30PM.
The “Great Organ: Great Artists” concert series consists of six performances by some of the most celebrated organists in the world including Thierry Escaich, Gerre Hancock, Olivier Latry, Marilyn Keiser, Daniel Roth, and Peter Conte. The featured organists were chosen as individuals who represent a range of world organ performance traditions and are expected to exercise their own individual style of organ playing, utilizing the distinctive features of the Great Organ.
The Great Organ – originally built by renowned American organ builder Ernest Skinner in 1910 and later expanded by the Aeolian-Skinner Organ Company in the 1950s – is a unique instrument, custom built with more than 1,800 pipes and 100 speaking stops, and was designed to take advantage of the dramatic acoustics of the world’s largest Gothic Cathedral.
