Peter Conte, Grand Court Organist at John Wanamaker Store and organist at St. Clement’s Episcopal Church in Philadelphia, will perform in the “Great Organ: Great Artists” concert series at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, located at 1047 Amsterdam Avenue (at 112th Street), Manhattan, on Tuesday, April 13, at 7:30PM.
The “Great Organ: Great Artists” concert series consists of six performances by some of the most celebrated organists in the world including Peter Conte, Gerre Hancock, Olivier Latry, Marilyn Keiser, Thierry Escaich, and Daniel Roth. The featured organists were chosen as individuals who represent a range of world organ performance traditions and are expected to exercise their own individual style of organ playing, utilizing the distinctive features of the Great Organ.
The Great Organ – originally built by renowned American organ builder Ernest Skinner in 1910 and later expanded by the Aeolian-Skinner Organ Company in the 1950s – is a unique instrument, custom built with more than 1,800 pipes and 100 speaking stops, and was designed to take advantage of the dramatic acoustics of the world’s largest Gothic Cathedral.
