The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the National Geographic Society invite area residents to join in commemorating World Refugee Day at NGS headquarters on Friday, June 20 at 12 p.m. This year's event at NGS Headquarters, open to the public for the first time, will look at major refugee situations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Darfur and Myanmar. Speakers will include Daoud Hari, author of The Translator, NPR correspondent Deborah Amos, Thimothy Ju, a young refugee from Myanmar whose joourney was documented for an episode of MTV's True Life,and Farah Ahmedi, an Afghan refugee and author of The Other Side of the Sky. In recognition of his work bringing education to displaced children, Luol Deng, forward of the NBA's Chicago Bulls, will receive the Humanitarian of the Year award from UNHCR. After the remarks will be a free screening of the Academy Award-nominated documentary film War Dance, followed by a Q&A with the directors, Sean and Andrea Fine, both Washington D.C. natives.
