Quilts reflecting the lives and creativity of American women are on view beginning August 4 in The World According to Joyce Gross: Quilts from the Dolph Briscoe Center, an exhibition showcasing 30 historical quilts and quilt-related ephemera.
Special events highlighting this exhibition include:
Quilt appraisals on Saturday, August 8, 1-5pm by quilt authority Julie Silber. Bring your vintage quilts (made before 1960) to learn more about them and their value. Call 408-971-0323 x 14 for a reservation (verbal appraisal $30 per quilt; written appraisal $75 per quilt).
The World of Joyce Gross According to Julie Silber on Sunday, August 9, 1-2pm will be a delightful tour as Silber shares stories and insights about her 40-year friendship with Joyce Gross and their collecting passion. Tickets available on-line or by calling 408-971-0323 x 14 ($15 per ticket/$10 for members).
Historical Bed Turnings will be on Sunday, August 9 at 3:30pm and Tuesday, September 22 at 2pm. A Bed Turning was a social gathering of women quilters hosted by a quilter who would show the quilts she had made during the winter season. The Bed Turnings will feature a selection of quilts from the Lucille Hilty Collection. Lucy's longtime friend, Rosemary Mucklow, will tell stories as each quilt is lifted, revealing its historical and personal significance. The quilts will come alive as the stories unfurl. (Bed turnings are free with museum admission)
Fabric Tattoos: The Spirit of the Mola is a concurrent exhibition featuring brilliant textile designs of the indigenous people of Kuna. A special event will highlight the origins of the textiles--body painting and tattoos on South First Friday, 8-11pm when Christopher Agostino, a transformational face painter and henna artists will be on site to give you a mola spirit painting or henna tattoo. (Museum admission is free all day on Aug. 7, 10am-5pm and 8-11pm)
