With the increasing amount of data available electronically the need for
tools and techniques to extract, analyze, and make sense of massive social
data sets, many of which have strong temporal and geographic features, has
escalated. This has led to dramatic increase in research in areas such as
link analysis, social network analysis, dynamic network analysis, text
analysis, data mining and machine learning. Research in areas such as link
analysis, social network analysis, dynamic network analysis, and text
analysis has a long history. It is important to understand how information
flows in organizations, how people form relationships and connections, and
how these processes affect decision-making. Results of this research have
been applied to understand pathologies in organizations: how collusion and
fraud reveal themselves in the links within and among organizations.
This year we will encourage both the practical and theoretical
perspectives to solving problems related to mining large-scale dynamic
social network datasets including the Enron e-mail dataset, instant
messaging logs and online blog sources. In addition to the objectives of
previous years we specifically wish to bring together social network
statisticians with computer science data miners.
