Works of Art in the Metropolitan:
Adam and Eve
Kent Lydecker, an art historian and former Frederick P. and Sandra P. Rose Associate Director for Education
One of the greatest printmakers in history, Albrecht Dürer lived in an age when the world was being transformed by the power of the printing press and widely disseminated graphic images. His skill as a draftsman found ready expression in the new technologies of the woodcut, the etching, and the engraving, such that his mastery of these media—combined with his skills as a painter—won for him economic advantage and an international reputation. This lecture will explore these and related subjects, especially Dürer’s knowledge of ancient Roman art, through a close reading of one of his most acclaimed master engravings, Adam and Eve.
