"Geoff Dyer builds a lovely monument to jazz out of the common images and lore that wallpaper the imaginations of most jazz lovers. He takes the stories you've read a hundred times on liner notes (...) and insinuates his way inside, creating intimate portraits of a group of innovative men whose lives are checkered by racism, drugs, and madness." - Bart Schneider, Hungry Mind Review
The distinctive sound of Curios owes all to the group’s chemistry and the unrivalled interplay between the three musicians – Tom Cawley (piano), Sam Burgess (double bass) and Joshua Blackmore (drums).
Drawing on romantic classical music as much as modern jazz, Cawley’s compositions are melodic, fiery, serene and intense. Live, the band covers the whole spectrum – at times delicate, at times wildly percussive; flashing from a whisper to a roar.
Described in Time Out as ‘state-of-the-art piano trio music’, Chris Parker proclaimed Curios as ‘a must-see piano trio for anyone interested in where this most crucial of jazz formats can be taken’.
