Barbara Petzen, Outreach Coordinator at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard University, will speak about women in Islam and the diverse roles of Islam in Middle Eastern and other societies. Ms. Petzen is a popular lecturer at venues on the East Coast, and has done programs for the Public Broadcasting Service. Before coming to Harvard, she taught courses on Middle Eastern History, Islam and Womens Studies at Dalhousie University and St. Marys University in Nova Scotia, Canada. She received an Honours BA as a Rhodes Scholar from Oxford University in Oriental Studies.
Ms. Petzen will speak at the Foster City Library on Monday, October 16th at 7:30 pm; at the Belmont Library on Tuesday, October 17th at 7:00 pm; at the Millbrae Library on Wednesday, October 18th at 7:00 pm; at the College of San Mateo Theatre on Thursday, October 19th at 10:00 am; and at the Pacifica Library on Friday, October 20th at 7:30 pm. Ms. Petzen will be moderating an appearance by Khaled Hosseini, author of The Kite Runner, at the San Mateo Performing Arts Center on Thursday, October 19th at 7:30 pm. All of these programs are part of One Book, One Community: San Mateo County Reads The Kite Runner and are free and open to the public.
