History of Women in Eclectic Music:
Musician, songwriter and producer, JBeatz created the concert series in 2003 while living in Philadelphia, PA. Our purpose is to promote women musicians and artists who create original and non-genre specific music and poetry. We wish to give eclectic music its space and appreciation. Our idea: Highlight solo artists and bands that are women-led and that do not neatly fit into music industry categories.

About the artists:
JBeatz

Aguafuego, the brainchild of JBeatz, is an evolving coming together of unique combinations of musicians to interpret her music. This singer-songwriter, instrumentalist (flute, pan pipe, Tibetan flute, ocarina, piano, saxophone, guitar) and producer is dedicated to developing a new sound, rooted not only in her South American heritage, but also encompassing her background in classical, reggae, rock, jazz, world, hip hop, Latin and folk music. With original songs in English and in Spanish, her music brings a global mix of sounds to create a soulful blend, a tapestry for her timely lyrics. As a vocalist and wind player for various groups, she has performed at numerous festivals, museums, universities and music venues since 1984 including the Turk's Head Music and Arts Festival, Make It A Night Wednesday Series at The Philadelphia Museum of Art, Penn's Landing, Make It A Night in Wilmington Delaware, The Philadelphia Fringe Festival and the NYC Marathon in 2004. She has performed internationally at Festival de Verano in Cantabria Spain and more recently with an international group of Italian and North American musicians co-founding The Delicious Life Orchestra in Bologna, Italy. Other past performances included opening with Tree of Life for Yellowman and with Upper Dubland, opening for Black Uhuru.

Mars “that revolutionary sister” Caulton
Casting word + song into rhythms electronic + acoustic, Mars delivers social analysis, dreams and blueprints for change. In 1997, she founded Poetic Service Announcement, periodic collaborations with other artists that deliver urgent political messages to non-traditional settings from street corners to Bud Billikan parades. She was a member of Chicago/Mad Bar’s 1999 National Poetry Slam team; founder of female improvisational poetry/percussion/musical mob She Laughs; is vocalist for the group Red Eye Renaissance; works in photo-collage; and is a degreed early childhood educator. She has been a teaching artist for Ravinia Festival and Sherwood Conservatory of Music. As a veteran activist and organizer, she has fought injustices from rape and nuclear weapons to the KKK and the railroad of Mumia Abu-Jamal.

Kama Linden
Kama, a New York City based artist, uses her songwriting as therapy, identifying what went wrong with the relationship, her response to it and how she’s going to get the hell over it. Her aggression takes presence in the words, using her sultry voice to win over music lovers. The songs are as sexy & dominating as is Kama. Each song is an answer to every question the listener has about life and love. Kama seduces her listeners with her silky voice and sets the tracks against a riveting beat, worthy of having you out of your seat to dance to every song. This is one artist you want to watch for…or watch out for! She’s sure to bull doze over you with her latest release, for she holds nothing back in producing such an ecstatic sound! Pop/Rock has a new Princess, one with a bit of a grudge, but that’s how we like it! Check out her newest CD release: Uninhibited (2006) which is being distributed by Mohican Records out of the UK.

Valencia Bey
Moving and positive are words often used to describe the music of Chicago singer/songwriter Valencia Bey. Her honest and thoughtful lyrics have touched many on her journey, and she's still growing and changing for the better. Her music is a mix of folk, rock and soul, but it just kinda happened that way, because she simply writes and sings what makes her happy. When it comes to singing and songwriting, Valencia likes to keep things simple, and that's working really well for her. She has received a number of songwriting awards, including the Academy of Gospel Music Association's Urban Gospel Song of the Year. She has also been recognized by VH1's Song of the Year. She has performed in numerous venues - churches, coffeehouses and pubs - in the Midwest and on the east coast. She's currently working on her debut CD.
