Pottstown, Pennsylvania — On March 12th from 7:00pm to 9:00pm, Pottsgrove Manor will host “With a Merry Old Song: An Evening of Colonial Tavern Music.”
Taverns, public houses and “ordinaries” catered to citizens from every social level during the colonial era. Serving hearty food and a wide variety of drinks, including liquors, wines, cider and ales, these gathering places were centers of social interaction.
For one night only, stop in at the fictional “Potts’ Tavern” for a unique evening as Pottsgrove Manor’s costumed interpreters and musicians entertain visitors with tavern songs and other popular music of the 18th century, accompanied by harp and harpsichord. Visitors can join in the singing or try out a number of colonial games. Historically-inspired, non-alcoholic refreshments will be offered. There is a suggested donation of $2 per person for this program.
This program kicks off the opening of Pottsgrove Manor’s new exhibit “Spirituous Liquors and Healthful Distillations: Alcohol in Colonial America.” Alcohol was a part of everyday life in the 18th century, and colonists from all walks of life used many types of alcohol in a variety of ways. This exhibit will focus on the making, use, and abuse of alcohol in the Potts’ world. Programming throughout the year will incorporate many of the exhibit themes. Visitors will be able to tour the exhibit during the March 12th program.
The exhibit will run from March 12, 2011 through January 29, 2012 and can be viewed while taking a guided tour of the manor house during regular museum hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. & Sunday, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Tours are given on the hour; last tour of the day begins as 3:00 p.m. Closed Mondays and county holidays. Groups of 10 or more should pre-register by calling 610.326.4014.
