Two Canadian bands, fresh from the independent scene in the North, are hitting the Chicago stage on this evening. Winter Gloves consistently receive live show reviews that echo the sentiments of a Toronto show review from Canada’s MuchMusic, who declared “Winter Gloves steal the show”, and NME who highlighted the band at a Montreal festival: “Winter Gloves harness what we’ve been recognizing as a ‘Montreal sound’, low slung new wave propelled on by some filthy beats in fine style. But they do it with more charisma and better songs than anyone else so far.”. Young Galaxy’s 2010 release “Invisible Republic” showcases a band that has fully come into its own — there’s a new urgency in McCandless’ rococo vocals, bolstered by Ramsay’s swirling melodies. Though their songs often contrast the pain of heartache with the idealism of hopeful dreams, the pair reveals their own unfailing bond through the yin and yang of their music, from their note-perfect harmonies to their complementary lyrics.
