Gotta Go Gotta Throw Presents the 14th Annual St. Paul Winter Carnival Disc Sports Festival Benefiting the Second Harvest Food Shelf
Gotta Go Gotta Throw is hosting the 14th Annual St Paul Winter Carnival Ice Bowl which will be held January 24th & 25th at Como Park from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. This Winter Carnival sanctioned event is a Disc Sports Festival, showcasing both Disc Golf and Ultimate Frisbee.
The Disc Sports Festival Ice Bowl is a fundraiser for the Second Harvest Food Shelf of St. Paul. The Ice Bowl is for all those disc golfers gutsy, crazy, desperate, and fun-loving enough to join together in an act of disc golf solidarity.
Regardless of the weather conditions, the idea is to have fun, raise funds and food for local food banks and dispel the gloom of winter. There are mandatory Ice Bowl Rules: #1—Under no circumstances, may an Ice Bowl be cancelled or postponed because of weather conditions. #2—No wimps or whiners are allowed. #3. —There are no excuses for not attending. (Either be there or be a wimp!)
Last year we had approximately 190 participants in 18 to 22 degree weather, 10-1 mile per hour winds and 4 inches of snow cover and raised $750 and 180 lbs of food for the food shelf. This year we are expecting to exceed those numbers.
Disc Golfers will tee off on Hole 1 of a wonderful 24-hole temporary disc golf course that meanders through Como Park. Disc Golf has been an associated event with the St. Paul Winter Carnival since 1995. The 24-hole course at Como Park is highly revered by the players.
Ultimate Frisbee (Frisbee Football) was added to the event three years ago. Ultimate is a team sport (much like soccer or football) played with an ultimate disc (Frisbee) featuring 45-minute games.
A hole in one range will be set up as a fundraiser for the 2nd Harvest Heartland Food Shelf. A short disc golf hole will be set up so participants can pay for a chance to qualify for the grand prize. A putting contest will also be held. Discs for this will be provided. All net proceeds from this event will go to charity. This is a great opportunity for everyone – both Festival participants and spectators -to throw a disc or two for a good cause. All event participants will be encouraged to bring a non-perishable food donation. Anyone can participate in the Hole In One contest. The grand prizes last year were an 8GB IPod and portable disc golf basket.
The general public is welcome and encouraged to participate. Although the sports are competitive in nature, the principal purpose of the “Festival” is to raise funds and food for the Food Shelf, have fun and learn more about these growing sports.
