ADELSHEIM VINEYARD
David Adelsheim, Proprietor Chehalem Mountains AVA
‘It's difficult to envision our future. We don't want it to be Napa Valley, and we don't want it to be Burgundy. We want it to be the Willamette Valley. We want to hang on to that collaborative aspect. That has led this upstart place, with little or no reason, to exist.’
–David Adelsheim
One of the Willamette Valley’s founding pioneers, David founded Adelsheim Vineyard in 1971. As the original winemaker he established the winery’s focus on rich, complex Pinot noirs and elegant white wines. His winemaking experience includes work at the experimental winery of the Lycée Viticole in Beaune, France and The Eyrie Vineyards in Oregon. David has been a pivotal leader in the Oregon wine industry, helping to create the Oregon Wine Board, serving as the Board’s first chair, and also as president of the Oregon Winegrowers Association. Over the years, David has been honored three times by the Oregon Winegrowers Association for his outstanding service to the industry. In 2006, he was honored with the Classic Wines Auction’s Oregon Vintner Award for significant achievements in building the Oregon wine industry and establishing its reputation worldwide.
ANTICA TERRA
Maggie Harrison, Winemaker Eola-Amity Hills AVA
‘In just a few years, Maggie Harrison has managed to place Antica Terra on my short list
of Willamette Valley’s finest producers.’– Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate
The inspired moment, the one that changed everything, occurred after a bout with malaria, on an island off the coast of Kenya. In this moment, doubting her ability to return to Chicago and begin her career in conflict resolution, Maggie Harrison decided to become a winemaker. This simple decision, incredible luck, and her own tenacity sent her to Ventura County where she landed, without any experience, the holy grail of winemaking apprenticeships. Maggie worked for nine wonderful and life changing vintages under the tutelage of Manfred Krankl at the iconic winery Sine Qua Non. In 2004, at Manfred’s urging, she started her own Syrah project called Lillian. At this point she could see the rest of her life unfolding clearly before her. She and her husband Michael would settle down in Santa Barbara and raise a family. She would tend to the barrels at Sine Qua Non and make tiny amounts of her own exquisite Syrah on the side. But her well-laid plans were not to be. In 2005, three friends on a search for land visited Antica Terra and knew immediately that this was the property they had been looking for. When they asked Maggie to become the winemaker at Antica Terra she emphatically refused. But the three friends were clever, and convinced Maggie to simply take a look at the vineyard and offer her opinion about the qualities of the site. Twenty six seconds after arriving among the oaks, fossils, and stunted vines of Antica Terra, she found herself hunched beneath one of the trees, phone in hand, explaining to her husband that they would be moving to Oregon.
ARCHERY SUMMIT
Leigh Bartholomew, Vineyard Director Dundee Hills AVA
‘Archery Summit has established itself as the Rolls-Royce of Oregon Pinot Noir.’ –Harvey Steiman, Wine Spectator
Ask Leigh Bartholomew why she’s been so successful at Archery Summit, and her reply is 100 percent modest: “The vineyard sites are exceptional; I feel lucky to be managing them.” Archery Summit’s vineyards inspire Leigh to turn land into grape-growing laboratories where she experiments with everything from clone selection and vine spacing to pruning techniques—all in the name of excellence. Start small, pay attention to success and repeat it—these are Leigh’s rules of thumb:
“We’re gifted with the kind of sites that permit us to expand our thinking, to constantly challenge and change how we grow grapes. I’m always looking for ways to give Anna—our winemaker—the best fruit possible.”
After gleaning hands-on vineyard experience in Washington State and Chile, Leigh studied viticulture at the University of California at Davis. Master’s degree in hand, she then traveled the world, working harvests from California to Burgundy to New Zealand before eturning to the West Coast and joining the team at Archery Summit in 2000.
BRITTAN VINEYARDS
Robert Brittan, Proprietor & Winemaker McMinnville AVA
Brittan is ‘sure to send bolts of rapture through lovers of great Burgundy.’
–Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate
After earning a degree at UC Davis, Robert Brittan moved to Napa Valley and made wines for Far Niente, Saint Andrews and Stags’ Leap Winery. He left Stags’ Leap after 16 years as winemaker and estate manager to fulfill his dream of making Pinot Noir from unique sites in cooler climates. Robert brings over 30 years of experience growing grapes and making wine to his newest venture, Brittan Vineyards. He has always had a passion for Pinot Noir, and hopes that with the fruit from his estate vineyard in the foothills of the Coastal Range, he can bring a new voice to the McMinnville AVA and help form the style and definition of Pinot Noir from this recently designated winegrowing region.
SOLÉNA ESTATE
Laurent Montalieu, Proprietor & Winemaker Yamhill-Carlton AVA
‘Beautiful Pinot, with the elegance of Burgundy and the freshness of New World grapes.’
-- Wine Enthusiast
Laurent Montalieu took his first steps in the vineyard in Medoc owned by his great grandfather Joseph Montalieu. His interest in viticulture led him to the Institute of Oenology of Bordeaux, where he immersed himself in studies of vineyard management and winemaking. After successful stints at Chateau La Tour Blanche near Sauternes and Domaine Mumm in Napa Valley, Laurent moved to Oregon. In 2000 Laurent and his wife Danielle Andrus Montalieu purchased an 80-acre estate as their wedding gift to each other and registered with premium nurseries for six different clones of Pinot Noir vines as wedding gifts. They named the vineyard Domaine Danielle Laurent. While waiting for their own vines to mature, the Montalieus purchased fruit from various vineyards, and named their new label Soléna -- a combination of two names that signify the sun and the moon, and also the name of their daughter.
