WILKES LIBRARY CON: The unreal becomes reality July 25, 2009

Come join us for an all day celebration of authors, artists, actors, and activities the whole family can enjoy! Don’t miss out on our special events and be sure to come and check out all of our special guests at Wilkes County’s first convention!

We have events and activities planned for kids, teens, and adults from 10-4! We highly recommend bringing your camera and best of all, convention admission is FREE! You won’t want to miss out on all of the fantasy-inspired fun!

Event Schedule

10:00-10:30: Harry Potter Discussion Panel
Join local Ravenclaw Larkin Reynolds for a discussion about the Harry Potter books and movies!

10:30-11:00: Podcast 101
Join professional Podcaster Rich Sigfrit for a 10 minute ‘mini adventure’ and learn how a podcast is made!

11:00-11:30: Cos-Play Runway
Come dressed as your favorite storybook, comic book, or graphic novel character and participate in our Cos-Play Runway! Perform a short skit by yourself or with a friend! All ages welcome!

11:30:12:00: Meet the 501st, Rebel Legion, and Mandalorian Mercs
Join members of the 501st, Rebels, and Mercs costuming groups to learn how to make costumes and props from the Star Wars universe!

12:00-1:00: Film Exhibition “The Onslaught of Kester Kent”
Join local filmmaker Chris Church for the exhibition of his film “The Onslaught of Kester Kent” **this film exhibition is recommended for teens and adults only due to mild language and violence featured in the film.

2:15-2:30: Fairytale Bake-Off Taste-Off
Come join us after lunch to claim a piece of one of our bake off entrees! YUM!

2:30-3:00: Celebrity Question and Answer Panel
You have questions, our celebrities have answers! Join our special convention guests for a Question and Answer panel!

3:00-4:00: Dance, Dance Off!
All skill levels are welcome to dance, dance along in our “Dance, Dance Revolution” tournament!

*Hey Kids! Be sure to check out our “Kids Table”! Color and work on activities from 10-4!

*Don’t forget your camera as members of the 501st, Rebel Legion, and Mandalorian Mercs will be in costume from 10:30-12:30! You won’t want to miss your chance to get pictures of all of our cool Star Wars characters! Also look for our Star Trek characters from the Star Trek Independent Fleet and the Klingon Assault Group too!

*Calling all trainers and duelist! Bring your best decks and challenge your friends or make a new opponent at our Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, AND Warhammer trading card game tables open from 10-4!

*Also be sure to check out Make-A-Wish charity drawing for your chance to win cool prizes as donated by local businesses! Prizes will be awarded throughout the day so check back often and see if you’re a winner! All proceeds go to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation!

*Be sure not to miss any of our special con guests! We have illustrators Derik and Nikki Davis from Bitter Tea Studios, local filmmakers Chris Church and Michael Heckel, horror author Scott Nicholson, fantasy author Elaine Corvidae, and professional podcaster Rich Sigfrit!

*Don’t forget to bake your best for our “Fairytale Bake-Off”! The challenge; if you choose to accept it is to bake a cake or dessert inspired by your favorite book, comic book, or graphic novel! Bring in your creation along with the book it was based on for public display! After lunch, we will be serving up the tasty entrees! Be sure to bring in you entrée before 2 PM for judging.

*BRAINS! Join local filmmaker Michael Heckel and his makeup crew for a Zombie Makeup Demo and then line up for a free Zombie Makeover from 2:00-4:00 PM!

*Lords and ladies of the court shant want to miss a daring swordplay demonstration performed by knights from the SCA during the morning! (Exact time for this event TBA)
