Widayat Between Worlds: A Retrospective is a collaboration between Singapore Art Museum and Widayat Museum. As a modern Indonesian artist, Widayat, emerged out of a nationalist art academy (ASRI) in the immediate years following Indonesia’s independence. His paintings have been described as ‘magic-decorative’, the term referencing elements of fantasy and phantasmagory – myths, fantasy flora and fauna – and formal devices principally characterised by crowding of decorative motifs. Featured in this exhibition are Widayat’s production of prints, sculptures on found objects and ceramic wares. The exhibition explores Widayat as a ‘modern’ Indonesian artist and the ideological /discursive frameworks – historical, social and cultural. H. Widayat Museum in Indonesia occupies a facility in the 7,000-square meter compound along with the Hj. Soewarni Gallery and Hj. Soemini Art Shop, where souvenirs and other H Widayat Museum merchandise are displayed for sale.
