Adam Gopnik, writer for The New Yorker and author of Paris to the Moon, talks about his love for Manet's art. He asks what happens to our understanding of Manet's work if we remove him from his role as the begetter of all that came after in modernism, from the flat picture plane to the ironic slant, and treat him instead as a painter and poet outside any narrow one-way history.
