Since earliest published records in the 1500s, what we now know to be the giant squid was considered a monster of enormous size and terrifying temperament. However we have now learned that this giant creature seems to be quite unconcerned with today's sailors. This lecture will examine some of the myths and misconceptions about the giant squid and discuss the reality of its biology and its relationship with its principal predator, the sperm whale. Then we will have a rare opportunity to share in the excitement of the expeditions led by Dr. Roper in search of living giant squid in their natural habitat.
