IFC Films presents WHITE MATERIAL, opening on November 26, 2010, at Landmark’s Bridge Theatre in San Francisco and Landmark’s Shattuck Cinema in Berkeley.
Director Claire Denis (35 Shots of Rum) returns to Africa, where she grew up, for this haunting story of a stubborn French woman (Isabelle Huppert, The Piano Teacher, Story of Women) obsessed with staying on her coffee plantation even as an increasingly violent civil war threatens to engulf the area. Her listless son (Nicolas Duvauchelle, Wild Grass, The Girl on the Train. Beau Travail) refuses to help, and becomes an out-of-control vigilante after encountering threat. Meanwhile, her ex-husband (Christopher Lambert, Highlander) tries to sell the property behind her back and a wounded rebel soldier with a bounty on his head (Isaach de Bankole, who starred in Denis’ 1988 debut film Chocolat) is hiding on the premises. Huppert is a magnetic if enigmatic presence in a film whose oppressive atmosphere rivals that of Walkabout and Aguirre: the Wrath of God. Original music by Tindersticks.
