"When the Drummers Were Women" is an art history presentation with live drum demonstration by Barbara Gail. This slide show was the basis of the book "When the Drummers Were Women: A Spiritual History of Rhythm", both authored by friend and teacher, Layne Redmond. The forgotten her-story of women as the primary percussionists in the Ancient Mediterranean World, comes alive in over 60 photographs from temples and museums. Named Goddesses, Priestesses, and unnamed women are depicted playing the frame drum, the oldest known, most universal drum, dating back to 5600 BCE. Barbara will perform her frame drum piece "The Ancient Ones", and play the W. African djembe and Middle Eastern tambourine. Cost: No set fee, your generous donation is greatly appreciated! Held at The Rhythm Inlet, north end Nokomis.
