Author Jonathan Sarna in conversation with Jonathan Karp, Executive Director, American Jewish Historical Society
In December 1862, General Ulysses S. Grant issued an order expelling all the Jews from the territory under his command. Though quickly overturned by President Abraham Lincoln, the order became a key moment in American Jewish history. On the 150th anniversary of this edict, Sarna sheds new light on the enigmatic Grant and the Jews of that time.
