About the Speakers
Ferenc Kumin
Ferenc Kumin is an economist and political scientist. He holds two MAs from the Corvinus University of Budapest and from Central European University, and is a PhD candidate at the former. His fields of interest have been political communication and campaigning, political effect on finances, e-governance and e-democracy, and functioning of the parliamentarian heads of states.
He started his carrier as a political analyst in 2002 with frequent appearances in various media. In the meantime he started his guest lecturing activity at Századveg Political School, Corvinus University of Budapest, and later at Budapest College of Communication and Business.
In 2006 he became head of department at the Office of the President of the Republic responsible for the communication and strategic planning of the former head of state, László Sólyom.
Since August 2010 he is senior analyst at Századvég Foundation, a conservative think-tank.
Csaba Tóth
Csaba Toth is a political scientist with a wide range of experience covering both the practical and the academic areas of Hungarian politics.
He started his career in 2002 in the Ministry of Education, helping the incoming minister formulate policy options for educational reform. He moved on to work in the Prime Minister’s Office. Being affiliated with the then minor coalition party, the former SZDSZ (the Hungarian Liberal Party), his main task in the PM’s Office concerned coalition coordination.
In 2004 he became chief executive of the Szabó Miklós Foundation, the liberal party foundation of Hungary. In 2006 he was the deputy campaign manager of the liberal party, responsible for campaign strategy and research.
From 2007, he was working on setting up an independent, liberal-leaning think-tank. He became director of strategy of this newly founded institute, Republikon Institute, in 2008. Republikon managed to survive and become an influential institution despite the obvious setbacks suffered by Hungarian liberals and liberal-leaning institutions in general. As director of strategy, he oversaw the publication of dozens of analyses and policy papers and the organisation of a number of high-profile political events.
He is also active in the academic field of Hungarian political science. He has been guest lecturer at ELTE University since 2003. Ha has published numerous articles in academic journals, and is the co-author of three books, including the Hungarian Political System, the most comprehensive English language book on the subject.
In addition to political science, he holds a degree in sociology and marketing, and is writing his doctoral thesis on political marketing in Hungary.
The event will be held in English.
