An Adult Comedy for Those Who Haven’t Grown Up
After last year’s smash hit, Biographies of the Dead & Dying, MachineFair returns to the Vancouver International Fringe Festival with What You Want by Andrew Templeton a play about Vancouver and the people who currently inhabit the city.
In 2001, Templeton returned to his hometown of Vancouver after a fifteen year absence. What You Want is the almost true story of what he found. Weaving a one-man show through the stories of four characters, the play probes the sexual desires and foibles of a city that is at once real and imagined. A play that proves you can't go home because it isn’t there anymore.
The outstanding cast includes Rachel Aberle (Souvenirs), Gillian Bennett, Russell Bennett (both of Crude Love, Fringe 2008) and Sean Tyson. Kyla Gardiner (Biographies) is assistant directing and designing the show. It marks Templeton’s return to directing after a twenty years absence.
Templeton is also the author of Portia, My Love (nominated for a Jessie for Outstanding Original Script 2006) and This Mortal Flesh (nominated for a Jessie for Outstanding Original Script 2009)
After wowing audience during its original sold-out run at last year’s Vancouver Fringe, Biographies of the Dead & Dying was included in the Jericho Arts Centre’s Best of the Fringe 2009 season before returning to the Havana Theatre for a special encore presentation. A new, Toronto-based production of Biographies was included in the 2010 SummerWorks Festival, directed by Amiel Gladstone, where it was critically-acclaimed.
Praise for MachineFair’s last Fringe show:
Quite possibly one of the best plays I have ever seen...an excellent mix of suspense and thriller.

This is a smart, hour-long investigation into what it takes to be a writer: the sacrifices that the choice entails, the line between where imagination and madness lies.
