Last year, Vermont took a big step towards universal health care with the passage of Act 48, but we have a lot more work to do. The road to Green Mountain Care is long and the toughest fights are still ahead of us.
Our first big test is unfolding now. Over the next 3 months, state leaders must craft Vermont’s Health Benefit Exchange, a virtual market place to help individuals and small businesses purchase affordable insurance coverage – a requirement of the federal health care law.
If done right, the Exchange will help lay the ground work for Green Mountain Care (GMC) by simplifying Vermont’s health insurance system, streamlining paperwork, and beefing up consumer protections. It will also provide thousands of Vermonters with federal tax credits to help make premiums more affordable during our transition to GMC.
