The Office is an American comedy television series broadcast by the National Broadcasting Company (NBC). It is an adaptation of the previous BBC series of the same name. The Office was adapted for American audiences by Greg Daniels, a veteran writer for Saturday Night Live, King of the Hill, and The Simpsons. It is co-produced by Daniels' Deedle-Dee Productions, and Shine America, in association with Universal Television. The original executive producers were Daniels, Howard Klein, Ben Silverman, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, with numerous others being promoted in later seasons.
The series depicts the everyday lives of office employees in the Scranton, Pennsylvania branch of the fictional Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. To simulate the look of an actual documentary, it is filmed in a single-camera setup, without a studio audience or a laugh track. The show debuted on NBC as a midseason replacement on March 24, 2005, and features Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, B. J. Novak and Ed Helms among the main cast. Series star Carell, who portrayed Michael Scott, left the series near the end of the seventh season. Since its debut, the show has aired 176 half-hour episodes and concluded its eighth season on May 10, 2012. On August 21, 2012, Daniels announced that the upcoming ninth season would be the series' last.
The Office has received critical acclaim and has been included on several top TV series lists, and has also won several awards including four Primetime Emmy Awards, one of which for Outstanding Comedy Series in 2006. The series initially debuted to low ratings, but during its second season it became the highest-rated scripted series on NBC and was eventually chosen to follow Super Bowl XLIII. Off-network syndication of The Office began in late 2007, notably on TBS and Fox-owned stations in the United States.
On May 11, 2012, NBC renewed The Office for a ninth season. Series developer Greg Daniels is expected to return as showrunner this season. Daniels stated that the season will feature more big season arcs, saying "I'll tell you that the last couple of years, I don't think we did any big arc-type things in the way that we used to in the beginning, I think the thing we’re going to do is bring back a lot of arcs." Brent Forrester, who has been a consulting producer and writer since the third season, and new series writer Dan Sterling will be new executive producers to replace Paul Lieberstein and Mindy Kaling, who both departed full-time involvement in the series after the eighth season.
The series' cast is set to go through a mini-reboot during this season. Kaling and B. J. Novak will have much lesser roles as Kelly Kapoor and Ryan Howard, respectively; Kaling will appear in at least two episodes of the season, while Novak is also expected to only return in recurring appearances. John Krasinski and Ed Helms are expected to appear in fewer episodes as Jim Halpert and Andy Bernard in order to film several upcoming movies and Rainn Wilson will appear in at least 13 episodes as Dwight Schrute before leaving for the planned Dwight-centric spin-off. Actress Catherine Tate, who joined the series as a series regular midway through season eight portraying Nellie Bertram, will continue with the series. Clark Duke and Jake Lacy have joined the cast as customer service representatives hired to deal with the many neglected customer service complaints Kelly has amassed over the years; Lacy's character, Pete, is also a possible love interest for Erin Hannon (Ellie Kemper). Former series regular David Denman will return as Roy Anderson in the second episode of the season; he was last seen as part of the Threat Level Midnight film in season seven. Actor Bryan Cranston will direct an episode scheduled to air on October 18, 2012, titled "Work Bus". Cast member Zach Woods' contract was not renewed for the season, however Gabe is still expected to return in some form. Daniels later said that the season will feature the return of "15 veteran cast members".
In a conference call with reporters on August 21, 2012, Greg Daniels announced that this will be the final season of the series. Daniels said, "This year feels like the last chance to really go out together and make an artistic ending for the show that pays off a lot of the stuff that matters most to fans." Daniels also said all the questions will be answered, such as who is the behind the documentary, and why they have been filming it for so long, as well as the reveal of the Scranton Strangler. Also, cast members John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, Rainn Wilson and Ed Helms will be credited as producers.
