DC3: Washington Music, the Way It Was And Is! Third in the series of performances celebrating Washington DC area composers, artists, and poets. On the program: Jelly Roll Morton's "Black Bottom Stomp" (Morton spent the depression years playing at the "Jungle Inn", a U St bar); three Duke Ellington songs (arranged by Charley Gerard): "All Too Soon"; "I've Got it Bad (And That Ain't Good)": and "In My Solitude"; Two Rilke Songs by Mary Howe (Mary Howe was not only a first-rate composer, but was a founder and director of the NSO, and founder, with Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge, of the Library of Congress music series), "Tango Afligido" by tango-obsessed Arlington composer Michael Strand, Six Short Pieces for alto saxophone and piano by University of Maryland's Lawrence Moss, "Memphis TN " by Charlie Barnett, and "Song of the Exile" by Dr. Ysaye Barnwell (of Sweet Honey in the Rock) in an instrumental arrangement by Charley Gerard. Performing: Karyn Friedman, mezzo-soprano, Rhonda Buckley, saxophone, Ben Redwine, clarinet, Sonya Hayes, violin, Jodi Beder, cello, Steve Tomlinson, trombone, Blair Goins, tuba, Carl Banner, piano.
