Warp: Arial-tectonics
April 20 to May 9, 2006
Opening reception: Thursday, April 20, 2006, 7 to 10 pm
Solo exhibition by alumnus Jay Gazley
In "Quadrant B", interwoven geometric shapes form ambiguous and anonymous landscapes of floating architectural forms. These architectonic landscapes evoke both aerial views of dense cityscapes as well as circuit boards, transportation networks, and webs of hidden communications systems now made visible.
These paintings combine elements of computer imagery and leftover fragments from the history of abstraction. Imagine the language of modernism downloaded onto a CAD program and used to create a new world that exists in an atemporal void between physical and virtual reality. In this techno junky world where humanity is noticeably absent, we are revealed and studied within the context of our collective technological fabrications and synthetic landscapes.
Jay Gazley graduated from The Ontario College of Art and Design in 2004. At OCAD he received the David L. Stevenson Scholarship and the Charles Magee Tuition Scholarship. As a Toronto based emerging artist he has been featured in several group and solo exhibitions, including Engine Gallery, Xpace Gallery, and Gallery Moos. Jay is currently participating in a residency program at The Gibraltar Point Centre for the Arts, on Toronto Island. He has recently been accepted to do his Masters Degree at The Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, in the inaugural year of their exciting new program.
