August 8 and 9, 2009 is threewalls annual symposium. This year, the program is Walking Through Walls: Performance Art and its Influence on the (post) Studio and (new) Institution.
Performance art has a history as a feminist movement, through which female roles in society were radically challenged, questioned and unpacked, utilizing the mantra ‘the personal is political’ as a primary tool.
In undoing and disrupting many of the expectations of women in society, female performance artists also threw into question the traditional roles of the studio and the gallery. Were these sites of production and reception personalized and politicized in any salient way? Did these performance practices inform, collide, critique or affirm the role of the studio or the gallery? Has this influence appeared recently with post-studio practices?
This panel aims to elucidate some of the influences that Performance Art has had on the developing and expanding role that sites of production (studio) and reception (institution) play in field of creative production.
