Walk for Education October 14, 2006

Community are invited to take a guided urban hike along a portion of Thornton Creek’s south fork, learn about the ecology and history of Seattle’s largest watershed, discover lush hidden green spaces, and enjoy hearty lunch , all while benefiting two educational nonprofit organizations.

The Walk For Education from 8:30 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 14, will benefit the North Seattle Community College Education Fund and the Homewaters Project. The walk will begin at NSCC’s front plaza where participants will travel by bus to Thornton Creek Park 6 to begin exploring Seattle’s urban wild, guided by local naturalists. After a two-three mile walk, walkers will be bused back to the college for a lunch.

Chris Page, Homewaters Project’s executive director, describes the walk as a chance to “get some light exercise, discover beautiful places inside the city, and learn about the natural and human history of Seattle’s largest stream – all while raising funds for vital educational programs.”

Participation in the walk is free; however, walkers are encouraged to collect donations from sponsors prior to the walk. In order to participate in the full day’s events, including lunch and prizes, participants are asked to contribute at least $10. Rebecca Hastings, director of events for the NSCC Education Fund, is recruiting fundraising team leaders.
