The Performing Arts & Lecture Series presents WAGING PEACE IN TIMES OF WAR, a multimedia concert, on Saturday, April 12, 2008, at 8:00 p.m. at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church, 2931 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, Tennessee.
Artists struggle mightily to make sense of the inhumanity of war, genocide, and terrorism. This event presents works of film, music, dance, and poetry that are deeply human, and ultimately resilient, responses to past and present atrocities. Two films will be screened: “Miserere et Guerre” by Kevin McCoy and David Hellams, based on World War I prints by Georges Rouault with music by James Carlson, and “Gulf War,” by Andre Hayter with music by Jacob ter Veldhuis. Knoxville poets Marilyn Kallet, Shonna Cole, and Brian Griffin will read from their works. The Momentum Dance Lab will present “War Square,” choreographed by Mike Bensey.
Musical works include the “Agnus Dei” from Benjamin Britten’s The War Requiem, a response to World War II; “In Buchenwald” from Donald McCullough’s Holocaust Cantata; Tom Wait’s “Day after Tomorrow”; and the world premiere of Knoxville composer James Carlson’s “A Sound as Yet Not Heard” for soprano and piano, a response to the terrorist attacks of 9-11 based on poetry by Gail Kadison Golden. Performing musicians include the Harmonia Vocal Quartet (Maria Rist, Mary Weaver, Keith Murray, and Kenneth Parsons); singer-songwriter Greg Horne; Kirsten Anderson, soprano; Hillary Herndon, viola; Wesley Harson, cello; Christopher Hamblin, organ; and the TVUUC Sanctuary Choir.
General seating with house doors opening 20 minutes before the performance. There is ample parking and easy handicap access at the venue. Tickets ($15/$10) are available at the door or in advance with no service charge from www.knoxtix.com or 865-523-7521.
