For the past year, Volpone and his servant Mosca have executed a scheme whereby Volpone feigns dying in order to extract expensive gifts from greedy friends by promising that each will be named his heir. Having amassed a sizeable fortune in gold, Volpone and Mosca plan to leave this very evening for Genoa where they will start a new life.
