Internationally-renowned Jewish and world music vocal ensemble Vocolot celebrates 25 years of musical activism with a joyful reunion concert and CD release on November 4. Since 1987 Vocolot has sung a vision of peace and social conscience for audiences all over the U.S. and in Europe, while celebrating Jewish women's music.
For the first time in the group's history, this special evening will bring together many of the 22 women who have been members of Vocolot over the years. A dazzling diversity of women's voices will be featured, including Bay Area jazz vocalist Ellen Robinson, Los Angeles-based singer Alison Lewis, Rabbi Rosalind Glaser, Cantor Felicia Sloin and former Beach Blanket Babylon cast member, Jennifer Karno.
At the dawn of a different election year, 1987, cantor Linda Hirschhorn co-founded the group and encouraged political participation with the slogan "Get out the local vote with Vocolot!" Since then Vocolot has continued to share messages of peace, social justice and women's equality through original songs and new arrangements of traditional texts. While their lyrics range from English to Ladino (the ancient language of the Sephardic Jews), their message is universal. Singing at festivals, clubs and synagogues, the group's performance highlights have included London and Nottingham in 2000, the International Jewish Music Festival in Amsterdam in 2008 and 2009, and a collaboration with the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir in the spring of this year. The group has just completed an ambitious recording project, resulting in the upcoming Vocolot at 25 CD. Linda Hirschhorn leads the group, which also features members Liz Stuart, Shana Levy and Talia Cooper.
