The second in the Visit Our Ancestors series of cemetery tours organized by Branigan Cultural Center in Las Cruces will meet at the Las Cruces Masonic Cemetery at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 10. The programs are free and open to the public. No registration is required.
The two-hour tour will begin at the corner of Compress and Brown, which is the oldest section of the cemetery. This is a large cemetery, so participants should be sure to wear comfortable shoes. It is also recommended that participants use plenty of sunscreen, and wear long sleeved shirts and hats. Bottled water will be available. The tour will also cross the street to visit the Odd Fellows Cemetery.
Among the notables buried at the Masonic Cemetery are Thomas and Alice Branigan, A. J. Fountain, John Newbrough, W.W. Cox, and Pat Garrett, and participants will learn more about these important local figures on the tour.
The Visit Our Ancestors series takes place at selected cemeteries in the Las Cruces area every other month. In September the series continues at the Tortugas Cemetery and at the Community Cemetery in November. For more information call 505 541-2219 or on the web at http://museums.las-cruces.org.
