Kentucky has a long and rich history of prose, poetry and song-writing. Robert Penn Warren was the first Poet Laureate of the United State. William Wells Brown (1814-1884) was America's first Black novelist. A. B. Guthrie (1901-1991) was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for his 1949 novel, The Way West. In more recent times, Bobbie Ann Mason, Barbara Kingsolver and Sue Grafton regularly grace the best sellers list. Using their works and words as inspiration, we have invited illustrators, graphic artists, designers, book binders and others to express their own particular creative visions.
