In this workshop, participants will learn how to use darkroom materials and techniques to build a film-based B&W workflow. Technical aspects will be discussed in relation to each student's expressive needs, understanding how film, paper and chemistry can be combined at their best.
Conversation and critique will touch upon technical as well as aesthetic issues. Starting from the assumption that there is no absolute "gold standard", we will review all the basics of B&W film processing and printing, identifying what your photographs need to look the way you desire and the technical steps needed to get there. Shooting, processing, and printing will be presented as interconnected parts of one unified workflow. Students will be encouraged to visualize their final prints from the moment they load their film.
Much of the first day will be spent shooting on a field trip and processing. The following day this work will be printed and reviewed as a group. The basics for producing archival negatives and prints will be reviewed.
