2 pm, Reception Hall
Virgin Comics Day at the Carlos
In 2006, Sir Richard Branson, author Deepak Chopra, filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, and comic book publisher Sharad Devarajan joined forces to create Virgin Comics. Based in Bangalore, the company works with a brilliant team of artists to explore the vast history of Indian mythology and translate the rich narratives for a new generation raised on MTV and Cartoon Network. Virgin titles include Ramayana 3392 AD, Devi, and Panchatantra’s End of Story. A fascinating panel of Emory scholars and Sharad Devarajan, ceo of Virgin Comics, discusses the artistic vision and process behind this venture and the growing comic book industry in the U.S. and India. Dr. Joyce Fleuckiger, Professor in Emory’s Department of Religion, discusses the place of comic books in the long tradition of pictorial storytelling in India. Professor Paul Courtwright, also of Emory’s Department of Religion, explores religion, nationalism, and visual culture in India. Original artwork by the Virgin Studio team in Bangalore will be on display in the Museum’s Reception Hall. Comics will also be available for sale at the Bookshop.
