Returning from a concert tour in France this month, violinist Solenn Seguillon (www.solennseguillon.com) will be joining pianist Allegra Chapman (www.allegrachapman.com) to give a recital of two of the great Romantic violin sonatas. Ms. Chapman will be playing one of Salle Pianos' one-of-a-kind 19th-century instruments. The period piano combined with the venue's unique atmosphere - that of a typical 19th-century music salon - will provide the audience with an ideal experience of these great works.
When Brahms and Franck wrote these works in the 1880s, both composers were in the later years of their lives. Belgian composer Franck dedicated his sonata to the virtuoso violinist Eugene Isaye while Brahms composed his third sonata for his compatriot Hans Von Bulow, a German virtuoso pianist, composer and conductor. By pairing these two works, the similarities and differences between the two composers become apparent. Both composers valued Classical forms in a time when others found them unfashionable, but both wrote with what we recognize today as a distinctly "romantic" voice. Despite these surface similarities, Brahms' and Franck's differing cultures and backgrounds translate clearly into distinct harmonic languages.
The concert is scheduled on March 22nd at Salle Pianos. The event includes fine food and wine.
