Vinton Cerf: 21st Century Challenges for the Internet August 15, 2006

The Internet now reaches at least a billion or more users and services on the order of a billion devices. Yet it still has a long way to go to reach everyone in the world. As the first decade of the Internet unfolds, there are new challenges both technically and policy-wise. Broadband is becoming increasingly important. Information on the Internet is increasing daily, and the long-term accessibility and interpretability of this information is in question. Support for Internet use in non-Latin based languages is increasingly important. The Internet offers services that were once the domain of radios, television, and telephony. New business models to support Internet growth are evolving and old business models supporting older network technologies are eroding.

What does the future hold for the Internet? There's no one more qualified to answer that question than Vinton Cerf. Widely known as one of the "Fathers of the Internet," Vint is the co-designer of the TCP/IP protocols and the architecture of the Internet during the 70’s and early 80’s. Currently, Vint sits on the board of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), and is the ICANN Chair. He is also the Vice President and Chief Internet Evangelist for Google. Vint has received numerous honorary degrees and awards for his contribution, including the U.S. National Medal of Technology from President Clinton in 1997, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Bush in 2005.
