Set in the wilds of suburban New Jersey, Kimberly Akimbo is a hilarious and heartrending play about a teenager with a rare condition causing her body to age faster than it should. When she and her family flee Secaucus under dubious circumstances, Kimberly is forced to reevaluate her life while contending with a hypochondriac mother, a rarely sober father, a scam-artist aunt, her own mortality and, most terrifying of all, the possibility of first love.
This versatile cast, under the direction of Bernie Cardell, includes Judy Phelan-Hill as Kimberly, Janelle Christie as Pattie, Gene Kato as Buddy, Libby Riff as Debra and Michael Hawthorne as Jeff.
David Lindsay-Abaire was most recently awarded the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his play Rabbit Hole, which premiered on Broadway last season at MTC’s Biltmore Theatre. The play also received five Tony Award nominations, including Best Play, and the Spirit of America Award. His most recent project is the book for the musical High Fidelity. He also provided the book and lyrics for the musical Shrek.
In addition to his work in theater, David wrote the screenplay for the upcoming Newline feature Inkheart, is at work on the screenplay for Spider Man 4 and currently working on screen adaptations of his plays Rabbit Hole (for 20th Century Fox starring Nicole Kidman) and Kimberly Akimbo for DreamWorks.
Kimberly Akimbo was commissioned by South Coast Rep, premiered at that theater in 2001, and received the LA Drama Critics Circle Award for playwriting, three Garland Awards, and the 2001 Kesselring Prize.
