Houston Friends of Music Treats Audiences with Tantalizing Trio
Houston Friends of Music welcomes back the highly acclaimed ensemble Vienna Piano Trio on Thursday, October 16 at 8 p.m. in Stude Concert Hall at The Shepherd School of Music, located at 6100 Main Street on the Rice University campus.
Founded in 1988, the Vienna Piano Trio has performed regularly in virtually every major music center in Europe, the Americas, Australia and the Far East. Together violinist Wolfgang Redik, cellist Matthias Gredler and pianist Stefan Mendl create a distinctive yet classical style not to be missed.
The ensemble made its Houston debut on the Houston Friends of Music series in October 2006.
“The Vienna Piano Trio has performed for almost 20 years together, and Houston Friends of Music is pleased to finally bring this fine ensemble to our 2008-2009 series,” states Houston Friends of Music Board President Ann Fairbanks. “To quote the Houston Chronicle, “the arts season is still young but the Houston debut of the Vienna Piano Trio will be one of the events elbowing its way to be ‘best of the year.”
The program will feature: Mozart: Piano Trio in B-flat Major K. 502; Smetana: Piano Trio in G Minor, Op. 15; Schubert: Piano Trio No. 2 in E-flat Major, D.929, Op. 100.
The trio’s records have garnered many awards including the British magazine Classic CD’s “Top of the Class” award in 1999 and the London Times’ “Classical Album of the Year” in 2000. In most recent years, BBC Music Magazine declared its Vols I and II of Schubert works to be benchmark recordings. Having studied with other world-renowned ensembles such as the Trio di Trieste, the Beux Arts Trio and the Guarneri Quartet, the Vienna Piano Trio gives master classes at a variety of the finest music institutions including the Royal College of Music in London and the Sydney Conservator of Music.
