VIDYA with ISHAN VERNALLIS
Friday, June 8th
This performance will be a collaboration between VidyA, the Red
Poppy's resident musicians, and intermedia visualist Ishan Vernallis. Please join us for VidyA's final residency performance.
VidyA is an adventurous new group that merges the virtuosity of jazz
with the melodic and rhythmic nuance of South Indian classical
(Carnatic) music. Led by critically acclaimed saxophonist Prasant
Radhakrishnan, VidyA has emerged with a soulful, penetrating sound
that pushes the labels of "fusion" and "world music." VidyA
exuberantly translates the language of Carnatic music into the idiom
of jazz.

Ishan Vernallis's work has shown at SFMOMA, the Seattle Art Museum,
Intersection for the Arts, and Magic Theater. Vernallis has
collaborated with the E.S.P. Project on a live theatrical dance piece,
ORBIT (notes from the edge of forever), and he was recently nominated
for an Izzy Award for visual design. Ishan's short film "To Hellen
Bach" received awards at the Humboldt International Film Festival and
Incidental Cinema, and has also shown at Counter Pulse and the Laura
Renaud-Wilson Dance Festival. His most recent short, "5th&market," has
been housed by mediaburn.org and counterpunch.com, and may be seen at
vimeo.com/clip:178796. He currently resides behind the redwood curtain
and is working on a short documentary about the need to remove the
Klamath River dams.
