Amber Brown is one very unhappy third-grader. She and Justin Daniels are the perfect team: they laugh at each other's jokes, sit next to each other in class, and stay best friends when Justin's dad has to move to Alabama. Even though some of the girls in her class are a bit too stuck-up for Amber's taste, she knows she'll be fine as long as Justin is around.

But now things are different. Now Justin's house has been sold and he is going to Alabama, too; that's too far away from New Jersey to think about. Amber is going to have to face the trials and tribulations of third grade alone!

Losing a friend would have been bad enough. But things get worse; the more Amber tries to bring up the subject of Alabama, the more Justin refuses to talk about it. The more he acts as if he's not a bit upset to lose his best friend, the madder Amber gets-until she finally vows she'll never speak to Justin Daniels again. Is there a happy ending in sight, or will this really be the worst year ever for Amber Brown?
